We specialize in Trespass/DIY Hunting or Self-Guided Hunting with Discounted Pricing on private land for those that don’t need a guide; they just need elk, deer or antelope private property to hunt on. We have 3 different properties to offer. The animal densities are much higher on private land to begin with and after the first shot opening morning the animal densities get even high as the public land hunters chase everything on to the private land. We work with solo hunters as well as groups and set a maximum number of hunters 4-8 maximum, on each property based on which property and season. We can offer an exclusive booking on a property to one group based on the maximum number of hunters and the property booked.

We want this to be a memorable and successful hunting experience for you and your group and strive very hard to do so.
Our Trespass/DIY – Self guided hunts are one rate if you have 1 license or two. We want you to be successful and know that this is an area of Colorado with the highest elk density in the world. It has a history of record book deer and antelope. We do some additional discounted pricing for archery and muzzleloader and for any antelope. This is high deer, elk and antelope production properties. Because of that you will see game. Whether you fill your license is all the sum of your ability to hunt the game in this habitat

We request you arrive with your rifles sighted in an inch high at 100 yards and dead on at 200 yards. The calibers we recommend are 270 with a 140 grain bullet larger calibers and bullet weights for elk and deer with a 243 legal with a 100 grain bullet. Our land if fenced for summer cattle grazing but wounded game animals can easily get through it and we don’t want you to carry your rifle and go after wounded game. If you wound an animal and it crosses the fence out of the property all the outfitter first and he will contact the landowner and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife so that you won’t be libel for any trespassing charges.

Archery hunts are booked in a 7 day block, Muzzleloader for the season, 1st Elk only for the season, 2nd & 3rd seasons can be booked in a 4 day block (First 4 days or last 4 days) as well for the 9 days season and of course the price for the 9 days is significantly higher for the 9 days. 4th season books for the season with weather in the 4th season being strong factor as to your ability to hunt or even success. Late season Cow hunts (Slater Valley Ranch from 11/15 – 11/30 & 2Draw 12/1 – 12/30) are booked in a 5 day block. At the bottom of the page is the Colorado Parks and Wildlife season dates.

There is no sighting in on the property we want to keep the shots at a minimum to keep the animals at the maximum like you. There is a range north of Craig that is open every Friday before the opening of the big game season. There is also one 10 miles east of Baggs on Road 70.
==================================================================================
If you’ve never hunted on a Colorado elk hunt during the rut, you have missed the magic of elk hunting in Colorado that is known worldwide. Many have hunted and called turkey as a reference. With elk, you are calling in an 800 pound gobbler with a set of antlers as wide as you’re out stretched arms with sharp points from the elk’s head to the end of those antlers. He is trying to get to you like an 800 pound turkey and all you have for protection is scrub oak bushes and a good set of rubbery legs. If you do it once and feel the magic of the rut, you will be hooked and beat down a path to Colorado every fall thereafter. You have enjoyed the magic of the September rut!
You are invited to hunt in the famous North West Colorado North of the town of Craig known as the elk capitol of the world. The label is well earned because you will be hunting south of the Elk capitol of the world, Craig Colorado. If you every wanted success hunting anything you want the highest density to sway the odds in your direction. You will be in the area known worldwide as being the highest elk density in the world. The ¼ or less area in the North West corner of the state holds about 200,000 plus elk. To put that is perspective; New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho each only have about 60,000 elk state wide. Yes, you are in elk heaven. Pack your rifle, bow or muzzleloader and have the time of your life.

To make it even more appealing and affordable, we have added discounted specials for a limited few that we take into this home for deer and elk. While you are here we even provide limited Mule Deer hunting while you are hunting elk at the same time in a combo hunt scenario.
In addition we have the best that your trip, “Out West” has to offer. You will wake up each morning in a cabin right in the middle of your hunting area. Many say, “Will we see elk from the lodge?”
You certainly will, because the elk view it as just another item in this prime elk habitat. Many of the deer and elk are local here year around, but the numbers a quickly expanded as the fall weather engulf the foot hills like part of the Rocky Mountains that Colorado Boasts about. You will be hunting a mountain ranch that consists of the plateaus with 8 major deep draws and drainages providing thermal protection for the wildlife and springs for the very precious water source at the head of each draw. With the number of roads and trails through the property and available transportation, this hunt can be considered a “Low Impact” hunt to a moderate impact hunt depending on the route you take for foot travel.

We have access to and some provide Landowner Tags or Vouchers if you didn’t draw a deer license and want to hunt deer at the same time as you are hunting elk. They are very limited, so pipe up if you are interested as soon as possible. Archery and Muzzleloader are September Bugle Hunts during the rut and provide a different hunt many times from the October and November rifle hunts. Your hunting will be in hunting units GMU301, GMU004, and GMU005. This licenses application process is quite confusing having other units that you can hunt in with the same license and the reverse. There are also the areas that have a “P” code for private land. By entering the codes that have a “P” for private land only in them, the odds go up for drawing the tag. With the CP&W cutting back on the quota for each season, especially deer, it will take at least one preference point to draw a deer tag in most units. The best part about the drawing information above is I handle the license application process for you when my hunters book the hunt so you don’t have to worry about getting the best odds. I have been here for 50 years and know the opportunities this complex system provides me but to others it is just confusion.

Elk are scattered out between feeding and bedding areas throughout the area. Your prior experience will pay off on this self-guided hunt if you put them to use on this private land hunt. It is also important to use and using a multitude of tactics to get the elk to expose themselves to a shot for the well-practiced marksman or archer. There is minimal dark timber and you will be hunting in habitat that provide vast scenic views of a mixture of food and cover rich scrub oak, along with oak brush cover. Many of the elk hunting property that you would hunt with other outfitters is at 8,000, 9,000 10,000 feet in altitude and higher which can required some adjustment in your physical activities for the first few day. How long depends on your physical abilities and the altitude that you live at most of the year.

Access and hunting the property is by foot, with an ATV allowed for game retrieval, bring yours. You will spot the animals which makes a good pair of Binoculars a must.
Some properties you will hunt off the drainages that has roads at the bottom that will take you to the cabin or a paved road. It is very easy to feel at ease as to where you are on the property. If you would like to bring a compass or GPS we do support that thought if it makes you more at ease. Cell phone signals are spotty in the bottom of the valleys, but are achievable on some of the plateaus. While Elk is our main hunting focus, we also offer Mule Deer and Bear. Licenses are available through the draw but may require preference points.

The Hunt
We do everything possible to make you successful on this self-guided hunt by removing the cost of the amenities that you provide for yourself and group. Please be certain prior to the hunt you have had your rifle sighted in and we recommend at least a box of ammunition worth of practice. Remember elk are there, but only you can shoot and hit the elk. Don’t say, “I should have practiced” after missing a good shot at a good bull. “

We have 2 different properties plus my personal cabin in Wilderness Ranch that can be rented in conjunction with a booked hunt or as a base to hunt National Forrest, which is less than one mile from the front door.

Ranch #1-Self guided/Trespass fee hunt Slater Valley Ranch Elk and or Deer w/Lodging
Minimum 6 Maximum 8

Ranch #2- Wilderness Ranch Cabin Rental Minimum 4 Maximum 8

Ranch #3- Two Draw Ranch No Lodging-Craig elk, Deer and Antelope Minimum 4 Maximum 6

==================================================================================
Slater Valley Ranch Units GMU004 and GMU005
Ranch #1-Slater Valley Ranch Lodge 4-6 hunter minimum 8 maximum/ Lodging/1400 acres with 1040 landlocked public land with direct access from the ranch. The adjacent rancher seldom if ever uses the BLM Property.
Animals: Elk, Deer, Bear
The first one we call the Slater Valley Ranch, located in GMU004 and GMU005 is a working cattle ranch during the summer and premium big game hunting in the fall. The pastures are grazed to increase the growth of forbes and new growth which attract deer and elk. Slater Creek traverses the property and a great dependable year round water source for all animals in the area and migration into the area.

You must be certain to leave the Lodge and the area the way you found it. You would want the same courtesy provided to you. Different season are different length as the archery and muzzle loader are 6 days with the Friday being the transition day for prior hunter to clean up and leave before noon and the arriving hunters to arrive after 12 noon to move their gear in.
An $800 security deposit is the Hunter/Group responsibility as well as garbage disposal. The returned cleaning and damage deposit will be returned to whoever paid the $ 800 cleaning and damage deposit.

This is a great place to hunt and stay and not have to spend big money on jam packed motels and driving to hunt each morning, In this case, you can see deer and elk out the window in the morning and hunt walking out of the Lodge door. When you figure motel lodging averages about $ 85 per person per night. well you do the math.

The hunting Lodge and 1400 acres with access to 1040 acres of BLM which is land locked by ours and another ranch. The only public access is to walk in, which requires horses or long legs. Otherwise the 1040 by the public to nearby BLM at Long Mountain is fantastic to hunt because of its diverse habitat and terrain, providing a local and migrating herd during the season. It is located approximately 45 miles North East of Craig and seven miles south of Slater, Colorado. With the elevation 6000-8000 feet with dense forest of aspens, cottonwoods and oak brush, very steep and rugged with most access by foot.
additional amenities such as meals, game retrieval and so on have been removed to lower the price of the hunt. If you want to add they are as follows:

A Semi- Guided hunt with meals and game retrieval is $3295 with a minimum of 4 hunters.
This package include lodging, meals, initial orientation, assistance in game retrieval where the hunter or group is responsible for field dressing the animal and getting it to where an ATV can pull up to the animal and load, daily input from the outfitter.
Outside of the Semi-guided hunt the Deer, Elk, antelope retrieval price at least $500 and dependent of hunter or group getting the animal ready and accessible to an ATV.

ATV’s are allowed for game retrieval only, bring yours. This can be a great asset for extricating game animals but remember the game animals are not accustom to the noise and will easily spook if there is much riding of them. If using it for extricating game animals we recommend that you use it at a minimum and do it during mid-day when animal movement is at a minimum to lower the chance of spooking game animals. There are trophy animals in the area and on the ranch every year. The ability for you to take one home has a lot to do with changing weather conditions and your personal hunting skills plus luck, your ability to have it and the animal’s ability to have bad luck. Hunt as much as you want during your time and hunt safe.

ELK Licenses
Bull Licenses are over the counter for the 2nd and 3rd big game season. The 1st and 4th season are draw with zero points. Archery is zero points to hunt private land and 1 point to hunt public and private land. Muzzleloader and archery are usually either sex licenses while the rifle seasons are specified. You can put in for cow elk license with zero points and draw in most cases. There may be an opportunity to get these licenses as leftovers after the draw but don’t depend on it since they are not always available.

Antelope Licenses
Antelope in GMU301 are private land zero points for a doe and 1 point for a buck on the private land. For private and public licenses it is 5 preference points for a buck and 1-2 for a doe. We do shoot does but the access fee is the same as the buck and it cannot be a second animal.

Deer Licenses
Deer are usually 1 point to draw a buck on private land with 2-3 points to draw an, any land buck license. We do shoot does but the access fee is the same as the buck and it cannot be a second animal.

These preference point requirement can change from year to year, so we recommend that you call the hunt Planners or research the Colorado Wildlife and Parks stats for information as to decide on what license.

As a service, we will apply for you for the March application period. The license price we will put on your credit card. If you hunt with us, the application process fee is just 29.95 then only $5 for each additional hunter in your group. Your license(s) will be mailed to you from the Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
